He is hugely experienced and this coupled with his friendly and professional approach will help ensure that you get the very best training available to enable you to be fully prepared for your Part

As well as helping me gain my grading and subsequent check test I also gained a friend and excellent mentor.

BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR

Become a Driving Instructor

The qualification to become a Driving Instructor (car) has 4 stages.

The first stage is registering as a prospective Driving Instructor. The cost of entry to the ADI Registry is currently £300 . The registration process includes a CRB check.

The second stage is the Theory Test.
Known as Part 1.

Studying for your theory test can start whilst waiting for the registration to be completed.

This is booked through the DSA website and costs currently £90.

The theory test is a computer based assessment of
a) 100 questions covering 4 categories of knowledge.
Road Procedure
Disability and the Law
Instructional techniques
Traffic signs and signals.

All of this information can be gained from the following DSA publications.
The Highway Code
The Driving Instructors Handbook.
Driving Excellence.

The overall pass mark is 85% however this must include a pass in each of the 4 categories of at least 80%

And b) A Hazard perception Test

This is again a computer based assessment.
You are asked to view 14 short videos which contain at least 1 hazard ( one of the clips will feature 2 hazards).
There are a maximum of 5 points to be scored on each video ( 10 points on one of the clips)
Points are scored by clicking the button on the mouse when you identify a developing hazard.

The pass standard is 57 points out of a possible 75.

Both parts of the theory test must be at or above the pass standard to be awarded the theory certificate.

The third stage is the Driving Test.
Known as Part 2.

This can only be booked on successful completion of the theory test.
This test lasts for approximately 1 hour and takes in various road and traffic conditions.
There is an eye sight test and some questions related to the vehicle which are known as the Show me / tell me Questions.
There are 6 manoeuvres to demonstrate.
The pass standard is limited to 6 minor Driver faults.

The fourth stage is the Test of Instructional Ability
Known as Part 3.

This requires you to deliver two 1/2 hour lessons on a subject decided by the examiner.
The lessons are known as Pre Set Tests.
Your ability to deliver these lessons to the required standard results in a grading.
Grade 4,5 & 6 pass.
Grades 1,2 & 3 have to resit.

There are only 3 attempts allowed at Part 2 & 3 stages.
An unlimited number at Part 1 stage.

Preparing for the test of Instructional ability is where the bulk of the time will be spent with your trainer.

Typically you will need 10 to 15 hours to prepare for your Part 2 Driving Test and a minimum of 40 hours for your Part 3.

It is possible to be working with pupils and therefore earning some money whilst preparing for your Part 3 test.

To apply for a Trainee licence your trainer must confirm to the DSA that you have had a minimum of 40 hours tuition at the Part 3 level.

A trainee licence last for 6 months.

The cost of this licence is currently £140

There are many organisations offering ADI training and clearly your choice of Trainer is very important.

We at CHERRY pride ourselves on our success in taking prospective Instructors through the qualification.

There clearly are costs incurred in achieving the ADI (car) qualification and we have devised the 'PAY AS U GO' scheme to assist you through your training.

There is no lump sum payment you simply pay for the time you require with your trainer.

The costs of tests and registration are paid by you.
