The Official Highway CodeDSA

The Driving Standards Agency is the organisation that controls all Driving Tests throughout the UK

The DSA employ and train examiners and operate test centres in all areas.

The Test centre for Lincoln is known as an MPTC or Multi Purpose Test Centre and is located in the south of Lincoln on Earlsfield Road.

How to book a test

All test bookings for both the theory and practical tests are handled by the National call centre in Newcastle.

Tests can be booked on line by visiting the DSA website, dsa.gov.uk , or by telephone on 0300 200 11 22

The waiting time for a theory test is typically 2 weeks and the cost at February 2010 is £31.

A theory test can be taken at any time following your receipt of your provisional licence.

Waiting times for a practical test vary throughout the year but are usually 4 to 6 weeks.

Your Instructor will be aware of the current waiting times and will advise accordingly.

A practical test cannot be booked without first passing the theory test.

The cost of a practical test for a car is ,as at February 2010, £62.

The Theory Test

The theory test is made up of a multiple choice part and a hazard perception part.
You need to pass both parts to pass it.
The multiple choice part is delivered using a tiuch screen computer.
There will be 50 questions to answer and the pass mark is 43 out of 50.
5 of the questions are based on a case study scenario.
The other questions are based on your knowledge of the Highway Code.

Hazard Perception

This is also delivered on a computer but you respond by clicking a button on the mouse.

You will be presented with a series of video clips which feature every day road scenes.
In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one will featuretwo developing hazards.

To score up to a maximum of 5 points for each hazard you must click the mouse at the time you see the hazard developing.

The pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75 marks.

The Practical Test

The practical test includes an eyesight test and some vehicle safety questions.

Your Instructor will explain all of these to you.

The Driving test lasts for about 40 minutes and will include some manoeuvres.

You can make up to 15 Driver faults and still pass.

However if you make one serious or dangerous fault you will fail.

Tests are usually available between the hours of 8am til 3pm Monday to Friday.
